Secretary John Kelly: Border Crossings Down 64%

In testimony before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security on Wednesday, DHS Secretary John Kelly said that the number of illegal immigrants coming across the U.S.-Mexico border has plummeted thanks to the efforts of President Donald Trump.
Total immigration flow is measured by how many apprehensions are made by U.S. Border Patrol agents. In March, agents made 16,600 arrests, a drop of 30% from February and a shocking drop of 64% from March of 2016.
“We’ve seen an absolutely amazing drop in the number of migrants coming out of Central America,” Kelly said. “In particular we have seen a dramatic reduction in the number of families, the number of children.”
Kelly told the panel that the drop didn’t come out of nowhere.
“This decrease in apprehensions is no accident,” he said. But, he noted, “it won’t last unless we do something to secure the border – a wall or physical barrier.”
Kelly said that securing the border would mean hiring more agents and using electronic monitoring in addition to constructing Trump’s famous wall.
“It is unlikely that we will build a wall from sea to shining sea,” he said. “All we know is that physical barriers do work if they are put in the right places.”
You may notice, of course, that Congress has passed no new immigration laws since Trump took office. No additional fencing has been built. No new money has been allocated. Proving, therefore, that President Obama had it within his power all along to do something about the illegal immigration surge of the last three years.
Well, perhaps that doesn’t quite say it, because Obama actually did do something about it – he worsened it.
He worsened it with DACA. He worsened it with DAPA. He worsened it when he instructed federal immigration agents to send illegal immigrants to live with friends and relatives in Ohio, never to be seen again. He worsened it by delivering a constant message to Mexicans and Central Americans: Go ahead and give it a try. Yeah, you might get caught, but hey, if you make it – and if you can hide in the shadows for long enough – we’ll eventually get you some amnesty. Keep your nose clean and we might even find you a nice, clean path to citizenship. Wouldn’t that be worth it? Come on, you only live once!
Just by changing that message, President Trump has taken the lawlessness out of our borders and restored a sense of sovereign integrity to the United States.
It’s tempting to use the old cliché: There’s a new sheriff in town.
But it would be more accurate to say: After a long absence, our town finally HAS a sheriff.
And not a day too soon.
