TEHRAN - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s former top political partner said on Saturday that posing a nuclear Iran as an “existential threat” to Israel is “manipulative” and warned that a preemptive unilateral Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities could have “catastrophic” consequences for Israel.
Speaking in a interview with Israel’s Channel 2, Mofaz, now opposition leader, said that such an attack would not be effective and it was very likely that such an attack would lead to war, the Jerusalem Post reported.
According to Israel National News, Mofaz, who formerly served as chief of Israel’s armed forces and an ex-defense minister, stated, “We need to ask ourselves… two questions.
“Will an early attack by Israel change Iran’s strategic situation regarding the nuclear program. My answer is no. And the second question is, will an early strike by Israel, in the current circumstances, in the existing situation in the Middle East… will an early attack lead to war?”
“My answer is that the probability for this is very high,” Mofaz stated.
According to the Jerusalem Post, he also said that Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s posing a nuclear Iran as an “existential threat” to Israel alone was “manipulative”.
Mofaz hinted on July 23 that he would not back Israeli military “adventures”, comments that appeaed to caution against possible action against Iran.
“Kadima will not embark on any operational adventures that will risk the future of our sons and daughters, and the future of Israel’s citizens,” he said at the time.
