The hallmark of 21st century hydrocarbon excavation is the developing trend towards deep sea drilling which becomes increasingly more important as land based reserves continue to decline. Concentrations of resource rich maritime zones will become the focus of most major conflicts in the foreseeable future, in the Persian gulf, the Caspian sea, the Mediterranean sea, the Aegean sea and eventually the South China sea.
Resource-conflicts continue all along, uninterrupted by wars or by peace treatise, where pipeline politics forms the center of gravity in regional cold wars, e.g. the current ramp-up between Iran and between the USA led coalition. The recent news regarding the new pipelines bypassing Hormuz opened by the UAE and Saudi Arabia have modified the game plan towards the upcoming attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
