Kerry: Russia can make the right choices

March 06 2014

Russia has sunk one of its own ships in a bid to block Ukrainian vessels from heading out into the Black Sea, a Ukrainian official says.! Kerry: “Russia has made choice that have escalated this situation.”

Russian ships early Wednesday pulled the anti-submarine vessel Ochakov out of a naval junkyard and sunk it in Donuzlav Lake, near the city of Novoozerne on the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Alexei Mazepa told the Los Angeles Times.

“We’re not working out what to do if Crimea joins the Russian Federation because we believe it’s unconstitutional,” Ukrainian interim Economy Minister Pavlo Sheremeta said.

Crimea’s new Prime Minister Sergei Aksyonov has rejected the Kiev government, saying ousted President Viktor Yanukovich is the country’s rightful president.  Aksyonov said Thursday that says 11,000 pro-Russian “self-defense troops” have joined Crimean military and riot police forces and now control all access to Crimea, the Associated Press reported.
