(Before It's News)

If we’ve learned anything from Google at all over the years is that it’s constantly evolving. This ever changing environment presents both challenges and opportunities to small business owners. If you’re on the forefront of technology you could benefit. If not, it could be detrimental to your ROI.

The most recent change Google made to their paid search platform is they removed all the ads that appear on the right hand side. For some businesses, their telephone has stopped ringing practically overnight. Their web inquiries have dried up since they lost their positioning and were relegated from the coveted front page of Google to obscurity (page 2) where nothing happens.

Pay-per-click costs skyrocketed overnight and still continue to go up. For some, this has been bad news. For those who can afford to play this game it means they now have less competition to worry about. Which means higher ROI. And, for Google it means more profits.

But, what about those business owners who could barely keep up to begin with who can no longer afford to compete?

One solution is to ramp up their SEO efforts and increase their digital footprint by following Google’s search engine optimization tips. In all honesty, this sounds great but since we’re talking about most typical business owners who are not digital marketing specialists this is hardly encouraging news.

Most business owners will end up doing nothing on their own. Some will try to learn the craft will little results. And some, will make things even worse by trying to game Google because they followed the advice of some ‘internet marketing guru’ and could end up having their websites penalized or completely de-listed. Oh, how could I forget those business owners who will hire an overseas SEO firm and for a mere few hundred dollars expect great returns. We know how this story ends.

When it comes to effective and safe search engine optimization, Detroit SEO company recommends that you first take a look at your website. Is it search engine friendly? Is it relevant? Is it up to date?

Next, check your social media presence. Are you regularly posting to your Facebook and Twitter account? Every legitimate business should. If you aren’t maybe you’re sending the wrong message to Google.

Make sure you appear in the right business categories and more importantly your local business directories. Your contact information should match across all these categories. This should be enough to get you started.
