US embasies all across the Middle East are closing. The State Department is closing all of the embassies after receivng an unspecifed threat, says State Department spokeswoman Marie Hart.
Hart said the closings are specific to Sunday, August 4, 2013. In a press briefing, Hart said:
It’s specifically August 4th. It is possible we may have additional days of closing as well. Of course, depending on our analysis, individual U.S. embassies and consulates will announce whether or not they are open and whether they are implementing restrictions or other measures.
She would not be pinned down on exactly what the threat was, but did say it was specific to diplomatic stations in the Middle East. A Jewish newspaper says the State Department send a warning to Americans in Israel:
“The Department of State has instructed certain U.S. Embassies and Consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday, August 4,” said a notice that was sent to U.S. citizens in Israel. “The Department has been apprised of information that, out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations, indicates we should institute these precautionary steps. It is possible we may have additional days of closings as well, depending on our analysis.” Read more
