“On the security front the entire NATO exercise was one that caused Afghanistan a lot of suffering, a lot of loss of life, and no gains,” Karzai noted, elaborating on comments from his spokesman yesterday.
The US has expressed hope to have a pact in place by the end of this month, but it seems unlikely that Karzai will back down, and it is likely the US will simply have to wait until the 2014 election and hope Karzai’s successor will be more willing to accept their terms.
He is of course correct in saying that its been a disaster for NATO in Afghanistan. Thousands dead over 13 years, billions spent and what do they have to show for it? Afghanistan is still a backwater 3rd world country. I doubt his successor will want them in the country either but thats if NATO doesnt stuff the ballot boxes to rig the election in their favor of course. Based on the candidates ive seen and the leading contenders, NATO will be gone and the Taliban will either be included in government or be the government. -Mort
