Sarah Palin recently told an assembled crowd that if she were president of the United States, “Waterboarding is how we’d baptize terrorists.”
The former Alaska governor first spoke out against the Obama Administration and Democrats in Washington, before turning to foreign policy.
Palin told the audience, “Come on. Enemies, who would utterly annihilate America, they who’d obviously have information on plots, to carry out Jihad. Oh, but you can’t offend them, can’t make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we’d baptize terrorists.”
The remarks were made to a meeting of members of the National Rifle Association, held in Indianapolis. Several religious leaders who also consider themselves to be political conservatives have spoken out against the statement by Palin.
Rod Dreher of the American Conservative called the reference to baptism “sacrilegious.” He said “If I thought that kind of hateful declaration and abuse of the Christian religion was what conservatism stood for, I wouldn’t be able to call myself a conservative.”
After receiving criticism from people across the political spectrum, Palin wrote a 319-word response to those criticizing her comments. She offered a piece of advice to those who question her concept of waterboarding-as-baptism.
“Good Lord, critics… buck up or stay in the truck,” she wrote.
Pain also referred to senators Al Franken and Harry Reid as “clownish little Kumbaya-humming fairytale-inhaling liberals.” She told the audience the pair were “not satisfied with just taking your money and your job, your truck and your property and your rights, your healthcare — they didn’t want to just stop at that.”
Officials from the NRA estimated 12,000 people attended the event.
