Earth is under the influence of a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) for several days now. Enhanced solar wind parameters are expected to continue through October 1, with G3 – Strong geomagnetic storm levels possible today.
G2 – Moderate geomagnetic storm thresholds were reached on two occasions, at 17:29 UTC on September 27 and 20:48 UTC on September 28.
Active to G1 storm levels are expected to continue, with possible isolated periods of G2 storming through September 30. There is also a slight chance for an isolated period of G3 – Strong storming today due to high solar wind speed and occasional periods of favorable IMF orientation.
Active levels, with isolated periods of G1 storming, are likely on October 1 as CH HSS effects are expected to decrease.
Since this time of year (equinox) favors auroras, many are experiencing one of the best shows of the year.
