From the Letters to the Editor section of today’s SHJ:
(occasional public service announcement here)
If we would eat just a little bit better; walk a little bit more and “Get Checked!” for colon cancer, members of our community could live longer and healthier lives. Whether you’re 26 or 76, colorectal cancer can add your name to the one in 16 of us who will have a brush with this dreaded disease that now takes more of us than breast and prostate cancers combined yet remains largely preventable. We, through our negligence, allow it to be the second leading cause of cancer deaths of both men and women.
No doctor? Without insurance reimbursement coverage for a colonoscopy? Or do you not know where/how to go for screening? Colon Cancer Solutions has a one-day app for that! We are all volunteers who have either had it or lost a loved one to a “mouth on down” GI cancer (our membership may have had any GI cancer, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis). Come to our fifth annual Hope & Cure Walk-Run at Duncan Park at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Meet a doctor you’ll like and talk to a health care professional to ask those questions that bother you. And pick up some great educational materials, including a free test kit to defend yourself. It’s a good start! The support group likes to keep our message simple: Just “Get Checked!”
Enjoy Panera bagels, Chick-fil-A yogurt parfaits, Brusters’ great refreshers and local fruit. Walmart Dorman Centre is partnering with us to help offer the community a full range of awareness materials while everyone has a bite. Then go and ask questions of survivors, caregivers and nursing volunteers ready to say hi!
