November 13, 2016: The GeoNet said the magnitude-6.6 quake hit New Zealand’s South Island at midnight, some 20 km SE of Hanmer Springs and 95 km from
Christchurch.
The earthquake occurred at 12:02 am midnight on November 14, 2016 at a depth of 16 km.
According to the New Zealand Herald, Civil Defence has issued a tsunami warning for the eastern coast of the South Island and says anyone near the coast should move to high ground
The tremor was felt as far as Wellington to Dunedin.
Following GeoNet Online Service, “very large” tremor was felt through much of the country which includes Taranaki, Hamilton and Auckland.
The New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Management (MCDEM) has warned of possible aftershocks.
In 2011, magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch killed 185 people causing 3.5 m tsunami waves in Tasman Lake.
