Swine exhibitors at the Indiana State Fair can anticipate a few extra precautions as they check-in this year. Denise Derrer, public information director for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health explains. “When exhibitors at the state fair check in this year before they offload their hogs they can anticipate the hogs having their temperatures checked,” she said. “This year, any pig that has a temperature reading of 105 or greater will be rejected from the show and won’t be allowed to offload.”
Derrer tells Brownfield there were reports of extra illness at the county fairs this year and they are working to keep the animals healthy. “We’re seeing general respiratory issues and temperatures running in some of the pigs,” she says. “We’re getting reports from veterinarians around the state that there has been more illness.” Derrer says they are implementing extra monitoring practices to ensure everyone participating has a good fair and show experience and exhibitors don’t come home with unhealthy pigs.
She says they realize the extra precautions may take some extra time – but they are asking exhibitors for their patience as they begin checking in hogs later today.
