Ohio Governor Kasich has signed an Executive Order that instructs state agencies to help farmers reduce the negative impacts of the drought and to seek federal assistance.
“The Executive Order will send an important message, but more important than any message it sends, it will provide some resources for people who find themselves in just a dire situation,” said the Governor.
While the Executive Order includes asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide Ohio farmers access to drought related federal assistance, the order also includes measures the state can implement, including the granting of waivers allowing farmers to make hay from state owned highway right-of-ways and waiving weight limits on trucks hauling hay and other feed products.
Director Dave Daniels says the Executive Order also instructs the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) to work directly with farmers impacted by the drought.
“Part of the Executive Order that the Governor signed would authorize us to put together some informational sessions in different parts of the state for farmers so they know what might be available,” said Director Daniels. “Bring those federal partners in with us and have them explain what assistance might be available out there.”
