USDA has declared natural disaster areas in 14 Wisconsin counties due to losses in maple syrup production this spring. Barron, Door, Florence, Forest, Kewaunee, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marinette, Pierce, Polk, St Croix, Shawano and Vilas counties are the designated disaster areas plus producers in 20 contiguous counties qualify for disaster assistance as well. Four Michigan and four Minnesota counties are also contiguous.
Maple syrup production was almost non-existent this spring as exceptionally warm temperatures in late February and early March caused a very limited sap run.
