USDA reports poultry production during June was down 5% on the year at 3.670 billion pounds. Most of that was chicken at 3.154 billion pounds, with turkey at 506.188 million, and duck at 9.580 million pounds.
The preliminary live weight of all poultry was 4.859 billion pounds, also down 5% from June 2011. Young chickens accounted for the bulk of that total at 4.136 billion pounds, with mature chickens at 75.905 million, turkeys at 635.651 million, and ducks at 13.255 million pounds.
All chickens averaged 5.85 pounds per bird, up 1% from last year, turkeys averaged 30.03 pounds, a 3% increase, and ducks averaged 6.79 pounds, a 1% decrease.
The chicken slaughter was 6% below a year ago at 719.374 million head, turkeys were down 5% at 21.099 million, and the duck kill was also down 5% at 1.962 million head.
Ante-mortem condemnations were 10.912 million pounds or 0.22% of the live weight and post-mortem condemnations were 33.056 million pounds or 0.89% of the inspected quantities.
