Taiwan reportedly will bar U.S. cattle organs and ground beef imports until 2022. According to DTN, Taiwan cites its domestic food sanitation law that prohibits those imports from anyplace that has had a case or cases of BSE in the last 10 years.
A final USDA report confirms that no products from the BSE infected dairy cow identified in California this past April had entered the human food chain. Further, the USDA report says the atypical case of BSE did NOT result from infected cattle feed. USDA Chief Veterinarian John Clifford says consumers can be assured of that and the safety of the entire U.S. beef supply.
“This closes out this particular case,” says Clifford, ”But, I think the U.S. consumer should have confidence in our food supply in the U.S. and the initiative that we have taken, both on this issue as well as any future issues relative to BSE.”
According to DTN, the Taiwan legislature last week passed amendments to its food safety law that would allow the banned drug ractopamine. That could pave the way for U.S. beef that contains the feed additive which is used to enhance leanness.
