It makes the long days and short nights, the blood, sweat and tears worth it. It’s making it to the Coliseum. And for a handful Indiana 4-H’ers last night was their chance to take it all home.
Fourteen year old Cole Wilcox from Lawrence County exhibited the Grand Champion Steer – and said he had one thing on his mind. “I just wanted to win – and nothing less,” he says.
Sixteen year old Evan Gilliland from LaGrange County raised his Grand Champion Barrow – and he says it’s been a long road to get to where they are today – but one he says is definitely worth it. “I’ve been showing hogs since my first year in 4-H and we didn’t have much success buying hogs – so we figured we’d try raising our own,” he says. “It’s a little bit cheaper than trying to buy a good one every year and it worked out pretty well for us.”
Cattle and hogs aren’t the only species shown in the Coliseum for the Grand Drive –fifteen year old Bradyn Ford of Benton County exhibited this year’s Grand Champion Meat Goat. He says the judge just liked his (the boer goat’s) look. “She liked his long sided-ness and he’s pretty powerful,” he says. “He has a pretty look from the side.”
