In a proactive measure, Indiana State Fair officials dismissed all the animals from the Swine Barn yesterday – a day earlier than scheduled. The Indiana Board of Animal Health made the recommendation after six pigs in the 4-H show developed temperatures over 105 degrees –which could indicate illness. Bret Marsh – Indiana State Veterinarian says they consider the decision to be very prudent in light of recent events.
The cause of the high fevers is still unknown – samples from the hogs have been submitted to the Purdue Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. The results will not be known for several days.
The open class breeding shows are still scheduled – and exhibition will resume with the Berkshire and Poland China breeds August 14, 2012.
