Waldwick - The Police Department has launched an internal investigation into the conduct of Police Sgt. Robert Woessner after police say he took part in a local jewelry treasure hunt while on duty Nov. 17.

Police Sgt. Robert Woessner holding a bag from Devon’s Fine Jewelry containing a pendant worth $500 that he found during the jewelry store’s Finders Keepers event Nov. 17.

From Nov. 14-18, the owner of Devon Fine Jewelry inWyckoff hid 32 pieces of jewelry in 12 area towns for an annual event called Finders Keepers.

Clues to the whereabouts of the jewelry were posted on the jewelry store’s website, its Facebook page and on Twitter and people were encouraged to check the sites throughout the day for the clues.

At 8 a.m. Nov. 17, a clue was posted on the store’s Facebook page saying, “If across from us you stand, you are most definitely inn. While butter and cream cheese may be tempting, don’t be distracted from the jewels that you’ll win.”

The clue was meant to lead seekers to Ho-Ho-KusBagels on Franklin Turnpike, where a bag containing a 14-karat white gold diamond pendant, worth $500, was stashed.

According to a post on the store’s Facebook page that was later removed, Woessner arrived at Ho-Ho-KusBagels at 8:02 a.m., claiming the pendant and setting “a new record for the fastest bag found.”

Laura Litchult, Mayor Russell Litchult’s daughter, filed a complaint with the police department and handed printouts of the Facebook page posting to the Borough Council at their meeting Nov. 22. The page shows a photo of Woessner in uniform holding the Devon Fine Jewelry bag.

Laura Litchult told the council during the public comment portion of the meeting that Woessner should be found “guilty of official misconduct.”
