Setting a bold new tone
This morning in Norfolk, Republican Mitt Romney announced the selection of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate in the upcoming presidential election.
Ryan, 42, is a sure bet to energize the Republican Party. The brilliant young Wisconsin Congressman has an unrivaled and rock solid background in economics as well as the ability to articulate a case for limited government while simultaneously arguing that a less expansive bureaucracy and a revamped entitlement system is the best way to preserve benefits for those Americans in real need.
This announcement of the young House Budget Chairman boldly sets the tone for the remainder of the campaign as the team begins a four-day bus tour through key battleground states — Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio.
Ryan’s proposed budget changes will now be central issues that drive the presidential campaign for the remaining three months. Romney is also able to turn a campaign that has degenerated into hostile jabs from Obama — a man who is unable to run on his dismal record — into an actual debate over policy.
A Romney/Ryan November victory would give the duo a mandate to make sweeping changes, reigning in the size of government, addressing the impact of the massive national debt, and maintaining a social safety net without creating a “culture of dependency” in which more people than ever — nearly half of all American households — receive some form of government benefits.
We wrote about the possibility of a Ryan VP announcement and the left’s panicky reaction on Thursday.
