A minor was arrested in connection with the assaults and rapes last month at a campground in Mexico state, which surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area, police said.
The 17-year-old suspect, identified only as Enrique N. and who goes by the alias “El Chuky,” allegedly planned the July 12 attack on campers, Mexico state Public Safety Secretary Salvador Neme said in a Twitter posting.
“‘El Chuky,’ involved in the El Colibri case, where they attacked campers in Ixtapaluca, was arrested in an operation in Chalco,” a city in Mexico state,” Neme said.
About 90 young people were camping in the El Colibri park in the city of Ixtapaluca when the attack occurred.
The assailants raped five young women, including three minors, robbed the campers, beat several of them and held the group captive for several hours.
The suspect has been linked to some of the “sexual assaults that occurred in the said incident,” Neme said.
He has been identified as one of the individuals who planned the attack on the campground, Neme said, adding that the other leaders were still on the run.
Investigators have linked the suspect to other crimes, including extortion, robberies, attacks on businesses, assaults on hikers and several killings, the public safety secretary said.
Authorities arrested 17 people, including two police officers, last month in connection with the attacks on the campers in El Colibri.
The suspects belonged to a gang that operated in the area and targeted tourists who camped in parks, officials said.
Investigators found some of the belongings stolen from the campers, such as cell phones and clothing, in the suspects’ homes, as well as firearms used in the attack, officials said.
