Hwy 82 Witchita Falls,TX…WTF? This is a Sheriff in a light armored tank with a gun turret pulling people over for speeding. Flashing red/blue lights and all. The Etowah County Sheriffs Office has acquired an armored vehicle that will be assigned to the Joint Special Operations Group for use in SWAT calls. The military-surplus vehicle is worth about $600,000 but it was acquired at no cost to the county. The only expense was the cost for transport to Etowah County from 29 Palms Marine base in California. It arrived in Etowah County on Tuesday and was driven down Alabama Highway 77 to the Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit office where it will be stored.

Many drivers on Wednesday did a double take as a tan military armored vehicle cruised down Alabama Highway 77 through Rainbow City. The vehicle was acquired by the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office through the federal military surplus program. It arrived Tuesday from California.

Sheriff Todd Entrekin was at a meeting recently when he learned the vehicles were going to available through the surplus program. He immediately notified Rob Savage, commander of the Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit.

Savage made a request for the vehicle and Etowah County was first on the list when they became available two weeks ago, Entrekin said.

The vehicle will be assigned to the Etowah County Special Operations Group, a tactical team comprised of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office and the Gadsden police and fire departments. Savage also is commander of JSOG. The armored vehicle is worth about $600,000, but it was available at no cost to the county.

“The only cost to us was the transportation to get it here,” Entrekin said.

A trucking company brought the vehicle to Etowah County from 29 Palms U.S Marine Corps base in California.

Savage said the JSOG has wanted to acquire an armored vehicle for a few years and has had three incidents this year in which the vehicle would have been beneficial.

The armored vehicle has no weapons on board.

“It’s solely for officer safety,” Savage said. “It allows us to get our people in to the perimeter without danger to them.”

Entrekin said it also can be used to rescue an officer who might be injured during a SWAT operation.

“It can be for officer rescue, but we hope that never happens,” he said. “It might sit here all year long, but if it is used just once and it keeps our officers safer, it is worth it.”
