At around 2:15 Monday afternoon, a large SUV crashed in East Texas, ejected 9 passengers.
A green GMC Envoy carrying 12 passengers was on its way to Splash Kingdom in Canton, TX when the vehicle rolled off the Interstate 20 towards a frontage road. As the vehicle flipped, nine of the passengers were ejected from the vehicle.
The driver, Federico Esquivel Acuna, was one of only seven to survive the crash. Three adults were in the car – Acuna, his wife, Estela Acuna, 34, and her sister, Elida Jaimes, 24. The wife and sister were transported to ETMC in Tyler, TX.
The five fatalities were:
Judith Jaimes, 2
Yuliza Acuna, 3
Saideth Acuna, 6
Omar Jaimes, 7
Rosbelia Jaimes, 13
A 15-year-old girl was not injured, while three boys, ages 5, 9 and 10, were taken to Children’s Hospital in Dallas.
Everyone in the vehicle was related.
An account has been set up at Citizens National Bank in Marshall, TX to help with the family’s funerals and medical costs.
At the time of the crash, 12 people were in the car, though there are only restraints for 7 including the driver. The driver and the 15-year-old were the only ones wearing seatbelts.
Federico Acuna may now face multiple charges of negligent homicide, though police say the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed yet.
