U.S. Set to Sign Cross-Border Environmental Pact with Mexico

On Wednesday, an 8-year environmental pact between the United States and Mexico will be signed by dignitaries from both sides of the border.

The Border 2020: U.S.-Mexico Environmental Program is set to be officially unveiled during a news conference in Tijuana.

The program is a collaboration between the U.S. and Mexico to improve the environment and protect the health of the nearly 12 million people living along the border. The bi-national program focuses on cleaning the air, providing safe drinking water, reducing the risk of exposure to hazardous waste, and ensuring emergency preparedness along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Border 2020 calls for a “bottom-up” approach at tackling the environmental and public health needs of those in the border region, meaning issues and projects with be addressed at a local level.

In an announcement of Wednesday’s event, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) stated, “The Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Lisa P. Jackson, and the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of México, Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, will lead the celebration that will close 10 years of successful binational cooperation under the Border 2012 Program and the announcement of the beginning of the new Border 2020 Environmental Program that will allow us to continue and strengthen our binational border cooperation.”

Among topics to be discussed Wednesday:

-Launch the new binational Border 2020 Program and celebrate accomplishments of the Border 2012 Program.
-Take first steps towards completing Regional and Borderwide Action Plans (which lay out realistic work to be accomplished in the next two years).
-Discuss strategies to strengthen partnerships, collaboration and communication.
