A German citizen was killed and three police officers wounded Wednesday in a gunbattle in the northern coastal town of Sosua, Dominican authorities said.
The fatality, identified as Peter Demetrick, was wearing a bulletproof vest and shot at police and prosecutors when they arrived at a residence in the La Mulata III development to conduct a court-ordered search.
Demetrick and several other foreign nationals arrested after the shootout were part of “a violent group that operates in Europe,” police said in a statement.
Police and prosecutors went to the residence at 8:30 a.m. to search for weapons, but were greeted by gunfire and “found themselves obliged to repel the aggression,” according to the statement.
Demetrick and three cops were wounded and the German subsequently died while being treated at a hospital.
Once inside the residence, police found an arms cache that included two U.S. military M-16 combat rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and seven more bulletproof vests.
The occupants of the home also had an armored vehicle, police said.
