“It was a privilege to pray with Gov. Romney, for his family and our country.”  - Billy Graham

Sunday is a good day for reflection. So it is noteworthy to address the recent meeting between Presidential candidate Mitt Romney and renowned Southern Baptist leader Rev. Billy Graham.

Graham, now 93, and suffering from debilitating Parkinson’s disease, prayed with Gov. Romney and offered him his unequivocal support.

Rev. Graham is no stranger to politics.  Renowned for leading world-wide religious revivals for more than 50 years — often on prime-time television specials — he has met with every U.S. president since Harry Truman. In 2010 Barack Obama traveled to Graham’s home, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, to meet with him.

The 30-minute meeting between the acclaimed evangelist and Romney provides Republican Mitt Romney with a major boost among evangelical Christians who might be hesitant supporting the first Mormon nominated for president.

Later, when he addressed supporters at an arena in downtown Asheville, not far from Graham’s home, Romney recounted his meeting with the distinguished evangelist and called him “an extraordinary American treasure.”

During the meeting, campaign aides said that Rev. Graham told Gov. Romney that he considered his father, George Romney, a friend. He also recalled that he held his first crusade in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1947 — the same year the former governor was born.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Graham asked Romney what he could do to help.

“Prayer is the most helpful thing you can do for me,” Romney said.

Billy Graham, his son Franklin Graham and Mitt Romney then prayed and as the meeting ended, campaign aides said that Graham told Romney: “I’ll do all I can to help you. And you can quote me on that.”

Rev. Graham then released this heartfelt statement regarding the meeting. A clear endorsement of Mitt Romneywas contained in these words: “It was a privilege to pray with Gov. Romney—for his family and our country. I will turn 94 the day after the upcoming election, and I believe America is at a crossroads. I hope millions of Americans will join me in praying for our nation and to vote for candidates who will support the biblical definition of marriage, protect the sanctity of life and defend our religious freedoms.”
