Chile’s Alexis Sanchez, a striker for F.C. Barcelona, will miss four weeks of action after straining a ligament in his right foot during an international friendly against Serbia.
Sanchez, 23, played just 20 minutes of Chile’s 3-1 loss Wednesday night before coming off the field with the injury.
The Spanish club said Thursday the striker underwent a series of tests upon his arrival in Barcelona that showed the existence of the strain.
F.C. Barcelona – which leads the Spanish league with 31 points, three ahead of Atletico Madrid – practiced Thursday afternoon in preparation for a match Saturday against Zaragoza.
The club is hopeful that captain and key defenseman Carles Puyol, who has missed several weeks with an elbow injury, will be medically cleared to play.
