Doctors Say Boxer Hector “Macho” Camacho is Brain Dead
Puerto Rican boxing icon Hector “Macho” Camacho has died from wounds suffered in a shooting this week on the Caribbean island, the director of the Centro Medico trauma facility, Dr. Ernesto Torres, said here Thursday. He was 50.
The latest medical tests on the former three-time boxing world champion confirmed that he was clinically brain dead, the physician told reporters.
The former fighter was shot in the face Tuesday by unknown assailants outside a bar in Bayamon, part of the San Juan metropolitan area. A man accompanying Camacho was killed in the attack.
Doctors waited for nearly two days for the test results that showed Camacho, one of Puerto Rico’s greatest-ever boxers, had lost the last fight of his life, Torres said.
The ex-boxer’s family will decide Friday whether or not to take him off life support, the hospital director said.
Camacho’s father has expressed his desire that his son’s organs be donated but also requested that the hospital not yet remove him from an artificial respirator.
The decision on when to disconnect him will be taken after the former boxer’s son – also named Hector Camacho – arrives on the island in the coming hours from New York.
Macho Camacho won world junior lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight crowns in the 1980s. His last title fight was a 1997 loss by unanimous decision to then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya.
The Puerto Rican, who has battled problems with drugs and alcohol, retired from the ring in 2009 with a lifetime record of 79-5-3.
Camacho spent two months behind bars in Mississippi for a 2005 burglary and his wife filed several domestic abuse complaints against him before ultimately divorcing him.
