US-based integrated energy company Entergy’s James A FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant in New York has been shut down after a fire broke out in its transformer.
The power plant stopped operations automatically after the fire was detected early morning today in the main transformer situated outside the nuclear reactor, the plant’s spokesperson Tammy Holden told Bloomberg.
Holden said an on-site fire crew extinguished the fire at the transformer with help from the nearby fire department, but the plant will remain closed until the repairs are made and cause of the fire is determined.
Located on the south shore of Lake Ontario in the town of Scriba in Oswego County, the 838MW power planthas been in commercial operation since 1975.
The Entergy Nuclear subsidiary owns, operates, supports and provides management services to 12 reactors in ten locations in the US. As of 2011, these reactors were generating 87.8 million MWh of power.
