George W. has the answer to U.S. unemployment
U. S. unemployment remains at record levels, continuing to hover in the area of 8% with an estimated 5 million out of work at least six months. Extended federal unemployment benefits that lasted 99 weeks areset to expire on December 31, 2012, propelling many of the nearly 2 million recipients back into vigorous job searches. But while the outlook for countless American families remains grim, George W. Bush has set forth a bold new job plan for American workers: Import immigrants to compete for those few jobs!
“America can be a lawful society and a welcoming society at the same time,” Bush said.
The Tuesday conference, “Immigration and Economic Growth: How Immigrants Grow the U.S. Economy,” hosted by the George W. Bush Institute and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas was intended to spotlight the “positive economic impact of immigration on U.S. economic growth.”
The timing may have been a tad off.
It’s all part of a Bush Institute initiative on finding ways to achieve a 4 percent gross domestic product growth. This past summer the institute released a book that notes immigrants help grow the economy by increasing the labor force and filling niche jobs.
Remaining a mystery, is how that addresses the problem of massive unemployment among American citizens.
The institute’s stated goal is to “raise the visibility of immigration issues, making sure that economic growth is connected to immigration.” This is the 64-page handbook titled, Growth and Immigration: A Handbook of Vital Immigration and Economic Growth Statistics, intended to make their case.
“We need to attract the best and brightest and keep them here,” said James Glassman executive director of the Bush Institute. Glassman added that the U.S. also needs a solution for those who are already in the country illegally.
Hmm-m. Wonder what that might be?
Under participant bios, we were surprised to see the Valley’s own Clint Bolick of the Goldwater Institute. And whadda’ya know? Bolick and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush have collaborated on a book: Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution, due out in 2013.
It’s a small world, after all.
