UPDATE:  One of Latin America’s Greatest Architects, Oscar Niemeyer, Dies

Celebrated Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer died Wednesday at a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, doctors said. He was 104.

The father of modern architecture in Brazil entered the hospital Nov. 2 suffering from kidney problems.

Niemeyer’s condition grew worse in recent days, Dr. Fernando Gjorup said earlier Wednesday, adding that the patient was breathing with the aid of a respirator and under sedation.

Niemeyer, winner of Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts in 1989, was born on Dec. 15, 1907 and, despite his advanced age, remained professionally active up until what turned out to be his final illness.

The acclaimed architect and avowed communist, who a half century ago designed the main buildings of Brasilia, the nation’s futuristic capital city, became known for the flowing curves of his reinforced concrete structures.
