Business and Labor Issue Unprecedented Joint Statement on Immigration Reform and Temporary Workers

In rare moment of unity the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO has issued a joint statement on how to approach the issue of temporary workers within a comprehensive immigration reform plan.

Both business and labor agree that U.S. workers should be given the first shot at any available jobs and they also both recognize that at times companies will need to hire foreign workers.

The solution:  an independent agency within the Executive Branch that will determine when, where and how many foreign workers are needed.

A path to citizenship and temporary worker programs have long been considered the most contentious elements of comprehensive immigration reform.

Over the last months, representatives of business and labor have been engaged in serious discussions about how to fix the immigration system in a way that benefits both workers and employers, with a focus on lesser-skilled occupations.

Both groups vowed to work together to help pass immigration reform in Congress.
