Peruvian Photographer Luis Choy Murdered in Lima

Peruvian photojournalist Luis Choy, 34, was shot to death in an apparent hit on the weekend at the door of his home in Lima’s Pueblo Libre district, according to police sources quoted by the daily El Comercio.

The photographer, who had worked for that paper, was shot once in the head and twice in the abdomen upon returning home in his SUV.

His killer made Choy get out of the vehicle, gunned him down and then fled in a waiting automobile without taking any of the photographer’s belongings, despite the fact that at first the attack appeared to be a mugging.

A few days ago, another crime directed public attention to the issue of lack of citizens’ security: a man was killed by a single bullet fired during an assault lasting just 30 seconds at a notary public’s office.

President Ollanta Humala, upon being asked about the feeling of insecurity prevailing in the capital, said that there is a “serious shortage of police officers” and that law enforcement authorities are in the process of acquiring more equipment to protect the public.
