British campaigners have called an emergency protest outside the US embassy in London to call attentions to the plight of 100 Guantanamo prisoners who have been on hunger strike since early February.
Leading British anti-war group, the Stop the War Coalition, said the protest on March 17 will be held in support of the injustices facing Gitmo inmates who are denied their most basic human rights.
The hunger strike has been a protest to confiscation of prisoners’ personal items from their cells and the desecration of the Holy Quran by US forces at the notorious detention center.
“In a letter sent by lawyers for the prisoners to the prison commander on March 4, they state that the ‘situation is potentially life-threatening’ [while] the US military denies the situation, which is clearly getting out of hand,” the campaign group said.
“Over half of the prisoners have been cleared for release and less than a dozen face any charges after more than a decade of arbitrary detention. The desperation shown in the latest episode of this hostage crisis has been ignored by the mainstream media. We invite you to join us as we protest this injustice,” it added.
