Cops Arrest Landowner For Allegedly Refusing To Pay Workers And Instigate Supervisors To Fire On Crowd Of Bangladeshi Workers–
Greek police have arrested two men in connection with the shooting and wounding of more than 20 migrant workers at a strawberry farm.
A 57-year-old landowner was arrested on Thursday as a “moral instigator” of the alleged shootings, as was another man for sheltering two of the presumed perpetrators overnight, police said.
The supervisors are believed to have opened fire on Wednesday at a crowd of about 200 mostly Bangladeshi immigrants who were demanding wages that had not been paid, police said.
The wounded were taken to hospital in the western port of Patras but none of the injuries was serious.
Anti-foreigner sentiment has been rising in Greece, where one in four workers is unemployed after five years of recession.
Unfulfilled promises
One of the immigrants involved in the protests told Greek Skai TV that they had been promised wages of $28.70 a day.
