English soccer great David Beckham described FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi as a player in a “class by himself” and said Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom the Argentine is often compared, is not quite at the same level.
The 37-year-old former Manchester United and English national team star and current member of Paris Saint-Germain told Argentine news agency Telam that Messi and Ronaldo are the world’s two greatest players, but that even the Portuguese forward is a rung below.
Beckham gave the interview in Barcelona, where an injured Messi came on in the second half and played a key role in securing a 1-1 draw Wednesday against PSG that gave Barça the victory on away goals and a berth in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona advanced to a two-leg semifinal showdown with last year’s runner-up, Bayern Munich, to be played on April 23 and May 1. The other semifinal will pit Real Madrid against Borussia Dortmund.
Beckham, who entered the field at Camp Nou as an 83rd-minute substitute, said Messi and Ronaldo may have similarities in terms of technical skill and talent, but the Argentine “is the best player in the world, simple as that.”
