The number of confirmed H7N9 bird flu cases in China increased by five to 96 today, according to the official Xinhua news agency. One new death was reported, bringing the total to 18.
The outbreak has been concentrated in eastern China. As of today, Shanghai and Zhejiang province both have reported 33 cases, Xinhua reported. Shanghai, one of China’s most important international business hubs, leads the country in deaths, with 11.
Xinhua said there is no evidence to date of human-to-human transmission of the disease. However, more than half of the victims have had no contact with poultry, the government-run Shanghai Daily reported today, citing agency and it own reporting.
