Peru Helicopter Crash Over Jungle Leaves 13 Dead

The 13 people who were traveling in a helicopter that crashed on the weekend in the jungle region of Loreto, in northeastern Peru, are dead, the French oil company Perenco confirmed Monday.

The helicopter – which was carrying four crew members and nine passengers, one of them a Perenco worker and the rest belonging to contract firms – was flying from the Amazon city of Iquitos to the company’s Lot 67 drilling zone when it crashed in an area extremely difficult to access.

In a communique, the company said that the relatives of the victims had been informed of their loved ones’ deaths.

Perenco executive director Jean-Michel Jacoulot said that “a full investigation is under way with the aim of understanding the cause of this terrible accident.”

Personnel from the air force and the Public Ministry are now in the area where the crash occurred to recover the bodies.
