Lately citizens have put out concerns over drones patrolling the US skies however what about robot jellyfish patrolling the seas. Researchers are currently building robot jellyfish the size of a human. Virginia Tech mechanical engineering professor Shashank Priya is leading the team and hopes that one day these robot jellyfish will be used for jobs ranging from military surveillance to cleaning up oil spills and mapping ocean floors.
The project is part of a $5 million multi-university program funded by the US Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research. The five-foot-seven, 175 pound, robot jellyfish is powered by electric motors that pump its eight mechanical arms up and down. Now the reason that the robot is so big is that it needs to house a rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery which is expected to be out at sea for months at a time on a single charge. The robot jellyfish is still a prototype and is still years away from deployment.
