Gardaí have estimated that at least 5,000 people took part in an anti-Property Tax and austerity protest in Dublin city centre.Marchers gathered for a rally outside City Hall.

Speakers urged the crowd not to pay what they called the “home tax” and promised a national campaign of resistance.

The protest was organised by the Campaign Against Home & Water Taxes, along with unions and anti-austerity groups to coincide with the meeting of EU Finance Ministers in Dublin Castle.

Gardaí closed roads in the vicinity and cordoned off entrances to the castle for the duration of the event.

Richard Boyd Barrett of People Before Profit accused the Government and the Troika of “living on another planet”.He said the march was the “beginning of a peoples’ revolt against this cruel, unjust austerity programme that is killing us”.

Apart from an attempt to burn an EU flag the march passed off peacefully.
