A tornado destroyed one mobile home and damaged two others south of Akron in Washington County on Monday night, but no injuries are reported, authorities said. Half of the town of Akron was without power after six power poles were knocked down between Brush and Last Chance, Washington County Emergency Management said. One non-residential structure was damaged north of Akron. The tornado hit before 8 p.m. Meanwhile, a powerful storm packing gusts of up to 52 mph in metro Denver, toppling trees and caused flight cancellations at Denver International Airport on Monday night. Airlines reported 26 flight cancellations at DIA as of 8 p.m. Monday. Other flights were delayed up to 40 minutes, a DIA spokesmanl said. Meanwhile, a blizzard warning has been issued from midnight to 6 p.m. Tuesday for Arapahoe, east Douglas, east Adams and central Elbert counties, the National Weather Service said.
That includes the communities of Castle Rock, Larkspur, Elbert, Kiowa, Bennet, Byers and Deer Trail. DIA officials encouraged travelers to check the status of their flight at FlyDenver.com and to arrive at the airport about two hours before their flight departure time. Strong winds also caused some DIA-bound flights to be diverted to the Colorado Springs Airport on Monday night. 7NEWS Chief Meteorologist Mike Nelson said winds will decrease somewhat after 9 p.m., but continue blowing from the north at 15-35 mph for most of the night.
