(Before It's News)

At least one person has been killed and several others injured in an attack on a police station in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

Police sources said on Wednesday that the attack took place in an area of Benghazi on Tuesday night, resulting only in the attacker™s death.

The police station was subsequently set on fire, most probably in retaliation for the attacker’s death by his relatives.

The perpetrators of the raid are still unknown, but are likely to be militants or affiliated with armed groups.

The incident happened after a Tuesday blast outside a hospital in the city killed three people and injured 14 others.

Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, has seen a wave of violence in recent weeks. At least four police stations have been bombed in the eastern city since last Friday, causing damage but no casualties until Wednesday.

Benghazi is the cradle of the 2011 uprising which toppled the long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi. The city has been the scene of numerous attacks and assassinations since then.
