American film director, screen writer and veteran Oliver Stone warned of the dangers that are imposed on the world by NSA surveillance and blasted the Obama administrations man hunt for whistleblower Edward Snowden infront of a audience gathered to promote his critically assailed TV series ‘The Untold History of the United States’ at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
“The United States is the dominant power in the universe, with its eavesdropping abilities, cyber abilities,” said Stone. “And the world is in danger with our tyranny.”
When speaking of NSA whistleblower Snowden he said, “He should be welcomed, and offered asylum..but he has no place to hide because every country is intimidated by the United States. This should not be. This is what’s wrong with the world today, and it’s very important that the world recognizes and gives asylum to Snowden. Everyone in the world is impacted by the United States Big Brother attitude toward the world.”
He continued, “It’s a disgrace that Obama is more concerned with hunting down Snowden than reforming these George Bush-style eavesdropping techniques…To me, Snowden is a hero, because he revealed secrets that we should all know, that the United States has repeatedly violated the Fourth Amendment.”
Critics have come out against Stone because he decided to utter such concern on the day the United States is to celebrate their independence, July 4th.
Noel Sheppard of News Busters described Stones words as ‘disgraceful’ and implied speaking out against the policies of the US federal government on the holiday could only come from someone who is ‘pompous’.
Clearly some of the media has not a clue of the contents in the Declaration of Independence.
There isn’t anything more American than speaking out against and warning others of the crimes being committed by the political class. Especially on July fourth, when on the same date in 1776 the document that lists the tyrannical behavior of the British empire was formed to declare independence.
The only disgraceful thing in view is the uneducated opinions of some of those who report on the news.
In early June Glenn Greenwald of the Guardian reported that the NSA was keeping very accurate documentation of the voluminous information it was receiving from its world wide wiretapping. The internal documents that the information came from explained that the NSA datamining tool called ‘Boundless Informant’ allows for the easy accessibility to information from any country in the world.
Stone, who is responsible for popular films like ‘Platoon’ and ‘Wall Street Money Never Sleeps’, is correct to say that the invasive information dragnet that has been placed over the world by the NSA is a menace to the freedoms of everyone.
Stone is also appropriately speaking out on Independence Day.
” every country is intimidated by the United States.”- Sounds like a bully to me. Luckily there’s anti- bullying legislation in congress. HahaHaa
Oliver Stone is right to be concerned about rising US tyranny but I’m afraid I can’t take too much notice of somebody who tweaks US historical facts to make a film more entertaining.
