A member of Britain™s ruling Conservative Party has been charged with sexual abuse and rape in multiple cases, it was announced on Tuesday.
Nigel Evans, a deputy speaker of the parliament, was charged by the Crown Prosecution Services for 8 offences including sexual assault, rape and indecent behaviour on men, which date back to 2002 until 2013, British media reported.
“Lancashire Constabulary has … been authorized to charge two counts of indecent assault, five counts of sexual assault and one count of rape relating to a total of seven alleged victims,” the prosecution service said in a statement.
Fifty-five year old Evans, the MP for Ribble Valley in Lancashire in northern England since 1992, resigned as deputy speaker after being arrested in May and again in June as a suspect in rape and sexual assault cases, which he denied as “completely false”.
He was one of parliament’s three deputy speakers since 2010, and was responsible for keeping order during often fractious debates, and for calling on members to speak as well as enforcing the rules of the lower House of Parliament.
Evans, a self-confessed gay, was vice chairman of the Conservative party from 1999 to 2001 and shadow Welsh Secretary for two years. He is due to appear before Preston Magistrates Court on September 18.
