Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera Wins Second MVP Title
Detroit Tigers superstar Miguel Cabrera won the American League Most Valuable Player Award for the second straight year, while Pittsburgh Pirates standout Andrew McCutchen picked up National League honors.
The 30-year-old Cabrera received 23 of 30 first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America to beat out 22-year-old Los Angeles Angels phenom Mike Trout and Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis.
A year after winning the Triple Crown, Cabrera once again led the AL in batting with a .348 average. The Venezuelan third baseman also hit 44 home runs and drove in 137 runs, finishing second behind Davis in those two categories.
Cabrera became the first player to win back-to-back AL MVPs since Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox in 1993 and 1994 and the first Hispanic player to win consecutive MVPs in that league.
He battled through a late-season groin injury and was a big part of a Tigers club that reached the American League Championship Series before losing in six games to the Boston Red Sox, who went on to win the World Series.
“This year was tougher because of injuries,” Cabrera was quoted as saying on mlb.com. “I think this one was special.”
McCutchen, meanwhile, received 28 of 30 first-place votes to beat out Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Paul Goldschmidt and St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina.
The 27-year-old, known for his flowing dreadlocks, hit .317 with 21 home runs and 84 RBI; he also scored 97 runs, stole 27 bases and had a .404 on-base percentage, which put him among the leaders in most NL offensive categories.
His MVP candidacy also was given a big boost when the Pirates qualified for the playoffs for the first time in more than two decades.
McCutchen said he realized he was in consideration for this prestigious award when Pirates fans began chanting “MVP” when he would come up to the plate. saying it was “awesome to be able to hear something like that.”
