Leader of Spain’s Galicia Region Meets with Cuban V.P.
The leader of the Spanish region of Galicia, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, met Friday with Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
The two men had lunch at La Habana Vieja restaurant together with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and Spanish Ambassador Francisco Montalban.
“This is a visit we’ve been waiting for and that we receive with enormous joy and enormous commitment,” Diaz-Canel told Spanish media, noting the close historic and family ties between the Cuban and Galician people, the native soil of many emigrants to the Americas.
Asked if Feijoo’s visit would favor relations between Havana and Madrid, Diaz-Canel said that Cuba has always been open to collaboration with Spain.
He added, however, that the bilateral relation is influenced by Spain’s role in the European Union’s position toward the island, and allusion to the EU’s “common position,” which makes closer relations contingent on an improvement in respect for human rights in Cuba.
About Cuba’s relations with Galicia, Diaz-Canel said there exists “a great potential for trade and economic interchanges, as well as cooperation” in such fields as culture and education.
“The visit of (Feijoo) with a group of Galician businessmen opens new possibities for investment in Cuba,” Diaz-Canel said, recalling the development project planned for the Special Zone at the port of Mariel, to which the island seeks to attract foreign capital.
Before his meeting with Diaz-Canel, Feijoo met individually with Bruno Rodriguez, to whom he communicated his interest in the economic reforms promoted in Cuba to “modernize” the socialist model.
