Colombian Coast Guard Seizes 1.5 Tons of Cocaine
Coast guard and police units seized 1.5 tons of cocaine from a high-speed launch intercepted in Pacific waters near the southwestern port of Buenaventura, the Colombian navy said Friday.
The operation unfolded 7 nautical miles from the mouth of the Cajambre River, according to an official statement.
The three men aboard the drug-laden vessel were taken into custody, the navy said.
Friday’s operation brought to two tons the amount of cocaine confiscated by Colombian authorities in a 48-hour period.
Colombia’s highway patrol seized 1,234 kilos (2,718 pounds) of cocaine Thursday in the northern province of Cordoba.
Officers discovered the drugs aboard a truck traveling on the road linking Cordoba’s capital, Monteria, with Arboletes in neighboring Antioquia province.
The cocaine was en route to the port city of Turbo, Antioquia, where it was to be loaded on a boat bound for the United States or Europe, police said.
