Mexico City’s Maco Art Fair Displays Picasso, Miro and Calder

The 2014 Zona Maco International Contemporary Art Fair is underway in Mexico City, showcasing works by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder and scores of other artists.

The 11th Zona Maco art fair, which runs until Sunday, is being held at the Centro Banamex and features works by more than 1,500 Ibero-American artists, organizers told Efe.

Geometric figures, sculptures and other pieces made from a variety of materials, such as wood, glass, cardboard and metal, as well as paintings and photographs, can be purchased by the public and collectors, Zona Maco director Zelika Garcia told Efe.

Art works range in price from about $300 to $4 million, Zona Maco artistic director Pablo del Val said.

The Miami-based Opera Gallery is exhibiting paintings by Picasso, Miro and Calder.

The gallery selected the works so “Mexicans can buy pieces that will allow them to have a good work of art,” Opera Gallery sales director Peter Aguirrebeña said.

Works of this caliber range in price from $50,000 to $1 million, “but even if they can’t buy them, it is important for people, especially children, to be able to admire them,” Aguirrebeña said.

Mexican artists and artisans, particularly those from the southern state of Oaxaca, are exhibiting silverware, children’s games and gold jewelry.

A wood relief titled “Rinocerontes” (Rhinoceros) by well-known artist Francisco Toledo is among the works on display.

Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Spain, the United States, Italy, Britain, France, Japan, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland are the participating countries this year.

The art fair is expected to draw about 40,000 visitors, organizers said.
