Police Seize 1.5 Tons of Cocaine in Colombia

Colombian police seized 1.5 tons of cocaine being shipped in a speedboat across the Caribbean to Honduras, authorities said Friday.

The operation was carried out in international waters near Panama by police with the support of Colombia’s air force, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Panamanian authorities.

The speedboat carrying the drug had sailed from the town of Acandi in the northern Colombian province of Choco with a four-man crew.

Seeing they had been discovered, crew members threw the packages of drug in the sea, turned the boat around and returned to Colombian waters to avoid capture, police said in a communique.

With the help of the U.S. Coast Guard and Panama’s naval airforce, police lifted out of the water 61 packs of cocaine with a total weight of 1,525 kilos (3,359 lbs.).

Colombian authorities suspect the drugs belonged to the Los Urabeños gang.
