Will Ethnic Russians In Estonia Be The Next Group To Get ‘Protection’ From The Kremlin?
The argument put forward by Russia for the annexation of Crimea was it’s duty to protect the large ethnic Russian speaking community living there. It cited that Ukraine was attempting to prevent the use of spoken Russian.
So should alarm bells be ringing over comments made by a Russian diplomat at a session of the United Nations Human Rights council?
“Language should not be used to segregate and isolate groups,” the diplomat was reported as saying. Russia was “concerned by steps taken in this regard in Estonia as well as in Ukraine,” the Moscow envoy was said to have added. (source)
Like Ukraine, Estonia, along with Lithuania and Latvia, were part of the Soviet Union, All three countries are concerned about the take-over of Crimea. Joe Biden is in Lithuania this week, assuring them, and their neighbors that they have the support of Washington and NATO.
Considering Ukraine also had the support of Washington and NATO, I’m sure Biden’s words make everyone feel warm and fuzzy, and they’ll sleep better in their beds tonight.
